“This work is pure teamwork”: Patrick Dorsten on his job as a CTA.

Patrick Dorsten is the Deputy Head of the Surgical Technical Assistants at the Urology Department of St. Antonius Hospital Gronau. We asked him about his daily work.

What does a CTA do in Urology Gronau?
As a Surgical Technical Assistant, I support the surgeon during robot-assisted procedures with the da Vinci system. I help prepare the operation, dock the robotic arms, insert instruments, and ensure everything is ready before the surgeon begins.

What is your role during surgery?
While the surgeon operates from the console, I work at the OR table, assist with instruments, clean and change tools, and monitor the procedure via 3D monitors. I'm essentially the surgeon’s extended hand.

What makes the job special?
It’s all about teamwork. Alongside me are two OR nurses and the anesthesia team. Our work is highly professional, but the team spirit is very supportive and familiar.

What does a typical day look like?
We start at 7:30 a.m. with a team meeting, then head into surgery. Before the procedure, I speak with patients to reassure them — many are nervous about robotic surgery. I explain that it’s still the doctor operating, not the robot.

How many surgeries do you assist with?
Usually two per day, each lasting 3–4 hours. Our team of eight CTAs works closely and supports each other.

What do you love about your job?
The precision, the technology, and being part of a team that helps people every day. Plus, no night or weekend shifts means a great work-life balance
